Heigh ho, heigh ho…

The working week would be infinitely duller without the dulcet tones of cheering music seeing us through till hometime.

Songwriters are constantly capturing commerce in rhythm and lyrics and tunes resonate regardless of whether you are a CEO taking meetings at 10pm or a paperboy on a cold morning.

Here are six business-themed songs to inspire us during work and beyond:

1. Career Opportunities – The Clash

A song for those in the wrong job and a little bit sick of career advice. Sometimes you might just not want to accept the status quo and instead rock out. Yet there’s clever advice to be taken from this Clash classic, in that “Career opportunities are the ones that never knock.”

2. Money – Pink Floyd

A much-loved and worryingly portentous song for the cash-strapped 21st century. Pink Floyd tell of our obsession with what many people go to work for, to earn lots of lovely money. From the cash register pinging during its opening chimes through to thoughts of buying ‘a new football team’, it’s a great ironic tune.

3. 9 to 5 - Dolly Parton

Dolly was ahead of her time back in 1980 when she decided to pour herself a cup of ambition, although her working hours may now be significantly out of date!  Nonetheless, this song is still a cheery anthem for female aspiration then and today.

4. Aloe Blacc – I need a dollar

The ultimate tale of transaction - “If I share with you my story will you share your dollar with me.” The funky beat belies an age-old tale of the relationship between work and self respect.

5. Kid Rock – God Bless Saturday

For anyone thinking of leaving their jobs and taking up business opportunities elsewhere, you’re probably echoing Kid Rock’s depiction of work as “This ball and chain”. And if you are ticking down the minutes until the weekend – this song is definitely for you. A nice reminder of what everyone is working towards, including rock stars!

6. Arctic Monkeys – When the Sun Goes Down

This is a song that illustrates the varying definition of what work can entail. Beautifully written with Alex Turner’s customary pith, it makes you wonder that you might think that you work hard, but some work significantly harder for significantly less than others.

Lastly, if you need any further suggestions, the working man’s auteur is Bruce Springsteen. The Boss has written albums full of songs on blue collar blues. Right, now back to work!
