The Top 11 Sectors That Have GROWN in 2011 - Part 2

It's what you’ve been waiting for all week, not world peace, not even a million bucks, but information on the top 5 industries which have grown in the last year.

As a quick recap, Recruiter Reed’s annual Job Index reveals that the number of full-time jobs available on its website increased by 17% in December 2011, compared to the same period in 2010, suggesting a big rise in interest in certain sectors. Hurrah!

See here for the tenth to sixth business sectors with the largest growth...but before I show you number five to one, a little bit of sad news.

Reed’s Job Index may have seen growth, but it also saw numbers drop in jobs available for some sectors. It seems that the public sector, especially education and social care showed a large annual decline.

But do not fear, this can be seen as good news for the small business buyer, who will work in the private sector. Stop working for the MAN and start working for yourself.

Here are the top five business sectors which have seen the most growth in the last year.

5. IT and Telecoms jobs had risen by 41% - Everyone loves the world wide web, well if the number of hours I spend looking at pictures of kittens and puppies online is any indicator, so perhaps consider buying a business in the software, telecoms, or computer resale markets?

4. Those not afraid of large groups could consider the Hospitality and catering industry which has seen Reed roles surge by 43%. There are plenty of businesses to get your teeth into in this sector,  from restaurants and cafes to catering businesses and even some with with property attached. A home-made sandwich it is then.

3. Also up by 43% are jobs in the Leisure and Tourism industry. Perhaps it is the London Olympics effect, or perhaps in hard times customers just want to spend their salaries on having a good time (so I tell my bank manager). Why not go crazy and buy your own dive centre or caravanning business?

2. We're getting to the big numbers now. With a 60% increase in positions, business buyers could consider the Engineering field. Engineering encompasses many different arenas, including manufacturing and civil engineering (which deals with planning and public works). So if you understood any of that last sentence this sector could be for you.

And finally...

1.    The Motoring and automotive sector has shown a massive 82% annual increase in jobs year-on-year – meaning budding entrepreneurs wanting to get their hands covered in oil and get their motors running should consider buying a garage, a petrol station or start carrying out MOTs. Transport is still both necessary and lucrative.

So there you have it. If you can get your hands on an engineering business which supplies motor parts to the internet-party-caravanning-industry you are going to have one hell of a year!
